profile - Steve Edwards

Having initially trained as a draughtsman, Steve soon became involved in interior design and building
refurbishment and can count Hamleys Toy Store and Argos's HQ in Milton Keynes as two of the more
well-known projects he has been involved with. Steve later trained as an Architectural Technologist
and it was whilst working with an award winning architectural practice that he became more familiar
with construction techniques and design procedures. He can thank their passion for high quality
design and respect for the historic built environment for his interest in building conservation.

For just over ten years since then, Steve has worked as a local government Conservation and Design
Officer. During this time he has enjoyed the unique privilege of influencing and guiding decisions
which have had a positive effect on the manner in which the built environment has changed. However,
the time has come for a change in direction. Steve intends to use his skills as a draughtsman and
designer, his knowledge of building technology and of historic building conservation, to provide
a specialist consultancy service direct to the private and public sector. He is able to undertake a broad
range of projects from building conversion and adaptation to new-build within both the domestic and
commercial sectors. Steve's specialism is historic building conservation therefore he is particularly
keen to work on projects involving development affecting Listed Buildings or Conservation Areas.

Before the design stage, Steve will engage in pre-application negotiations with the local authority to
establish sound design and planning principles. He will produce accurate and clear drawings to
convey your proposals in a way that your application has the best chance of securing the appropriate
permission or consent. Steve is a full member of the Institute of Building Conservation and currently
renewing his membership of the British Institute of Building Technologists. Steve has an HNC in
Building Studies (Cheltenham 1994) and a Post Graduate Diploma in Historic Building Conservation
(Oxford 1997).
